💡 What you just learned: This whole chapter hangs on one curve and one radius formula. Start with the radius: R = R₀A^(1/3) with R₀ = 1.2 fm, measured by scattering fast electrons, which means the volume goes as A — and therefore the nuclear density is the same, about 2.3 × 10¹⁷ kg m⁻³, for every nucleus from ⁴He to ²³⁸U, roughly 10¹⁴ times the density of water. Nuclei behave like drops of one liquid of fixed density, and the matter in a neutron star is packed at just about that density. The atom, by contrast, is 10⁴ times bigger in radius and about 10¹² times bigger in volume, so it is almost entirely empty — yet the nucleus still holds more than 99.9 % of the mass. Next the mass: a nucleus always weighs less than the free nucleons that make it, and that deficit is the mass defect ΔM = [Z m_p + N m_n] − M, worth E_b = ΔM c² with the conversion 1 u = 931.5 MeV/c². Divide by A and you get the quantity that decides everything, E_bn = E_b/A: it rises steeply for light nuclei, is practically flat at about 8 MeV right across 30 < A < 170, peaks near 8.75 MeV at A = 56, and has fallen to 7.6 MeV by A = 238. That flat middle is the fingerprint of the nuclear force: it is far stronger than the Coulomb force, which is itself far stronger than gravity; it is attractive beyond r₀ ≈ 0.8 fm and strongly repulsive below it, which is why nuclei neither fly apart nor collapse; it is charge-independent, the same for n–n, p–n and p–p; and it is so short-ranged that each nucleon only feels its immediate neighbours — the saturation property, which is exactly why adding more nucleons does not change the binding of one already inside. From the shape of that curve everything else follows in one sentence: energy is released whenever nucleons move TOWARDS the peak. Coming from the right, a heavy nucleus at 7.6 MeV splits into two middle-mass fragments at about 8.5 MeV, a gain of 0.9 MeV per nucleon and so 240 × 0.9 ≈ 216 MeV — the ≈ 200 MeV of fission, which first appears as the kinetic energy of the fragments and the emitted neutrons, with the fragments themselves radioactive and emitting β particles in succession. Coming from the left, light nuclei fuse, but only after paying the Coulomb barrier — about 400 keV for two protons, which by (3/2)kT = K would need T ~ 3 × 10⁹ K, while the Sun's core is only 1.5 × 10⁷ K, so only the protons far above the average energy actually fuse. The p–p cycle nets 4 ¹H → ⁴He + 26.7 MeV, and controlled fusion on Earth needs a plasma confined at about 10⁸ K because no container can hold it. Three vocabulary items NEET loves: isotopes share Z, isobars share A, isotones share N; and one lovely fact — a free neutron is unstable with a mean life of about 1000 s, but inside a nucleus it is stable.💡 आपने क्या सीखा: यह पूरा अध्याय एक वक्र और एक त्रिज्या-सूत्र पर टिका है।
